J/70 Corinthian World Cup, Calypso is leader after Day 1
Riva del Garda (Italy), June 1st, 2023 – Riva del Garda, 1 June 202 – The J/70 Corinthian World Cup, first event in the history of J/70 Class exclusively dedicated to Corinthian crews, got underway today in Riva del Garda (Italy), thanks to the joint organization of J/70 Italian Class, J/70 International Class and Fraglia Vela Riva.
Today, the seventy-five crews from twenty countries were challenged by the typical Southern wind of Garda Lake called “Ora”: three very balanced races were completed, determining a very balanced and challenging ranking that will further evolve in the next days.
Calypso Plastic Pledge by Jonathan Calascione, with sound placements (6-3-3) gains the top of the standings with 12 points and is followed, 18 points behind, by Tonu Toniste’s Irrational Exhuberance (5-4-21). Gianfranco Noè’s White Hawk is another great protagonist of the opening day and closes the first day of sailing in third place overall. The crew led by the Italian owner former Corinthian World Champion in Porto Cervo 2017, puts the seal on the first and third race of the series, losing a handful of points during the second race, finished in 30th place.
In fourth place of the overall standings we find Dads ‘N’ Lads by Tim Simpson and Ole Bettum (2-27-13), while from fifth to seventh position three boats are tied on the equals with 47 points: they are the Brazilian entry To Nessa, the Dutch Jello and the Australian Celestial. Five For Fighting 4.0 (Italy), Lift Ticket (France) and Mr Henri (Netherlands) close the top ten.
“We are excited about this start, but the road is still long and the fleet is competitive and very fierce, so no choice is taken for granted and every point is important. Thanks to the organizers for being able to recall such a beautiful Corinthian fleet from all over the World to the starting line!” commented Jonathan Calscione, owner of Calypso Plastic Pledge.
The regattas will resume tomorrow: the Race Committee, chaired by Giancarlo Crevatin, will display the first warning signal at 12.30.
J/70 Italian Class is supported, for the 2023 season, by Lincoln International, Alphazer, Garmin, Armare Ropes, Serena Wines, Vela Mania, Zhik, UtilGraph, IPA and OneOcean Foundation.
