Allianz Regatta part of Hempel World Cup Series and last serious test before Olympic Games

The Allianz Regatta from June 2-13 is part of World Sailing’s ‘Hempel World Cup Series’ for the coming two years. Nearly 300 sailors from 47 countries have been registered for this World Cup event. It is the first tournament, since the Corona-outbreak, in which several (eight out of ten) Olympic classes compete at the same time. We see a strong field of participants in four Olympic classes. For these athletes, the Allianz Regatta in Medemblik is also the last serious test for Tokyo 202One in which countries can distribute Olympic qualifications.

Allianz Regatta part of the “Hempel World Cup Series”
Since this spring, the Allianz Regatta is once again part of the “Hempel World Cup Series” of World Sailing, the international sailing association. The Allianz Regatta has been part of this prestigious competition series in the past, sailing in locations such as Miami USA, Genoa Italy, Hyéres France and Enoshima Japan.

Many registrations with Laser men and women and in both 49er classes
The Laser men (now called Ilca 7 class) is currently up to 87 entries, four of which are from the top ten of the last World Cup and 12 that are qualified for Tokyo.

In the Laser radial (Ilca 6) we count 71 participants, of which 14 participants from the top 15 of the most recent World Cup are present and 23 participants are qualified for this year’s Games.

Among the men in the 49er, we see 48 participants so far, six of whom are seeded for Tokyo with six teams from the top 13 of the most recent World Cup. In the 49erFX class 29 teams have registered.

In the other classes we see slightly smaller fields with between ten and 20 participants. Registration closes on Friday, May 28, 6 p.m. It is therefore possible that these numbers are still increasing. It has already been decided to cancel the 470 men and women due to insufficient insight into sufficient registrations.

“Looking forward to running the first multi-class event in Olympic sailing”
Event director Frans Hin said: “There are challenging times for all of us but the Olympic athletes have remained focused on preparing for Tokyo 2020. For the sailors, we are pleased to allow a trimmed down version of the Allianz Regatta in Medemblik.

“We are very excited to partner with World Sailing and host an official Hempel World Cup Series event. We have strong entries now in four Olympic classes and it looks like some nations will use the event as a final national qualifier for Tokyo 2020.

“As organisers on behalf of the Dutch Sailing Federation we are looking forward to running the first multi-class event in Olympic Sailing since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will be run in a safe manner for all participants and Dutch resident and will allow the sailors one last serious test ahead of the Olympic Games.”

Program
The Allianz Regatta in 2021 will be split into two weeks. In this way, there is sufficient space and time for everyone to be able to let all competitions take place in a safe manner with due observance of the applicable Corona measures.
